Similar to how you discovered me on TikTok, I ventured onto Pinterest and searched for “Black girl wedding hairstyles.” Surprisingly, the results predominantly featured wigs.
Is that so?
Indeed. The conventional sleek updo with a frontal sweep or a bun seemed to dominate the images. I even pinned several of these photos to my wedding inspiration board and contemplated the idea of opting for a lace front wig. Some individuals inquired, “Will you be donning a wig on your special day?” as if it were the expected choice. However, upon deeper reflection, I realized that such a choice did not align with my true self, and I desired my wedding appearance to authentically reflect who I am. This sentiment was echoed by my husband who expressed, “I want you to be true to yourself. You shouldn’t feel pressured to wear excessive makeup or a wig.”
I delved into exploring French curl braids as they exuded a delicate bridal aesthetic that resonated with me. I had the privilege of collaborating with a skilled braider in London named Anike Lawal, whose artistry left me in awe. A trial session conducted a few months prior to the wedding affirmed that this hairstyle truly encapsulated my essence. Additionally, while scouting for makeup artists on Instagram, I came across Deji Rachel, whose portfolio showcased numerous Black women embracing their natural hair on their wedding day, with one stunning bride flaunting an Afro. Their radiant beauty left a lasting impression on me.
Reflecting on your wedding day, how do you feel about your choice of hairstyle?
I adored it. Remarkably, the day of our nuptials coincided with the hottest recorded day in UK history, soaring to 40 degrees Celsius [104° F]. Despite the weight and warmth of my hair, I felt truly content with my decision.
Oh, wow!
Indeed, it was quite an extraordinary day to tie the knot. Yet, when I peruse the photographs now, I am filled with joy. I see myself authentically.
You looked absolutely stunning. How did your friends and family respond to your hairstyle?
I received an abundance of compliments. It was fortuitous that we embarked on our honeymoon merely two days later, sparing me from the need to restyle my hair. Our destination was the Seychelles. Upon our return, while navigating the London Underground, numerous individuals approached me inquiring about the mastermind behind my hairdo. It was gratifying to share the narrative of the braids I wore on my wedding day.
