The Philadelphia Phillies have worn the new City Connect uniforms twice this season. The controversial City Connect jerseys, featuring the colors of the City of Philadelphia’s flag, debuted April 12 in the second game of the series against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Love them or hate them, the Phillies will be wearing the blue, yellow, and black colored alternate uniforms at every Friday home game this season. Our collective eyes have plenty of time to adjust to these things.
But Phillies backup catcher and one-man party-machine Garrett Stubbs has come to embrace the new look the Phillies and some fans will be rocking this season. Appearing as a guest on the Foul Territory podcast, Stubbs had some funny things to say about the design of the Phillies’ City Connect uniforms.
“I think we look like a very sexy men’s beer league softball team, emphasis on the sexy,” explained Stubbs. “I think, and I hope that they grow on us and the rest of the city throughout the year.”
Just because Stubbs is pushing hard for the city and Phillies fans to accept the new City Connect jerseys doesn’t mean he, too, would have taken the uniform’s design in a different direction. Stubbs’ follow-up comment is something many Phillies fans would get behind.
“I like the story behind each part of the jersey,” added Stubbs. “I think the colors were a little off for me. I was kind of hoping for a full-on Phantic’s costume out there. That could have been really cool.”
The Philadelphia Phillies are not alone in MLB when it comes to the rollout of City Connect jerseys this season. Say what you want about the Phillies’ entry into the debate, but the rival New York Mets have finally released its version of the alternate uniforms. Let’s just say they could actually be worse than the on-field product taking the field in Queens this season.
Let’s have a little look at the Mets’ City Connect jerseys.
Hmm. For starters, these look awfully familiar. They almost look like another baseball team that calls New York City home and has actually won a World Series sometime in the last 38 years. Call it wishful thinking, but it sure looks like the Mets are trying to cop the look of the New York Yankees with this design. If George Steinbrenner were still alive, he would probably have his assistant-to-the-traveling secretary on the phone with lawyers to discuss a lawsuit as we speak.
The Phillies and Mets will match up for a home-and-home series from May 13 to 16, with two games played in Queens and Philadelphia. This series will set the tone for the London Series games being played abroad on June 8 and June 9 at London Stadium in London, UK.
