On the diagonally opposite corner of the space stood 10 mannequins adorned in outfits reminiscent of Margot Robbie as Barbie—original ensembles from the promotional tour brought in for the event to be viewed in person. Among them was the black and white striped Herve Leger mini dress inspired by the 1959 Barbie look that Robbie showcased in Australia during June, the Vivienne Westwood gown she wore at the film premiere in London, a dazzling black mermaid gown by Schiaparelli from the Los Angeles premiere, and an Atelier Versace gown that resonated with fans in Seoul.
This book launch garnered significant anticipation and excitement, especially with the presence of not just Robbie but also Mattel, the powerhouse behind the toy brand. Josh Silverman, the executive vice president and chief franchise officer of Mattel, expressed the emotional impact and joy the event brought to people. He mentioned, “The film succeeded in uniting individuals to share moments, which I believe is truly significant.”
The event also proved to be lucrative, generating over $150 million for the company. Silverman described it as a blend of artistry and enchantment that unfolded. Rizzoli, the publishing firm responsible for documenting the press tour’s fashion journey, was also in attendance. Charles Miers, Vice President at Rizzoli, remarked, “It was evident that this collaboration of creative minds and fashion designers was a momentous occasion in fashion history.”
Throughout the three-hour affair, Margot Robbie was constantly surrounded by well-wishers eager to commend the actress and producer. Mukamal, undoubtedly the next busiest individual in the room, played a pivotal role. While many of Barbie’s tour outfits made headlines, some never materialized due to the SAG-AFTRA strike.
“This situation made us realize that there are hidden gems of outfits that have never been unveiled to the world, and perhaps would never have been seen if not for this opportunity.” Mukamal reflected on both the showcased and unrevealed looks, finding it challenging to pick a favorite. He shared, “It’s a tough choice. The tour outfits evoke vivid memories where each piece takes me back to a specific city, a particular day with Margot. These are memories I will cherish. Yet, the unseen looks hold a special allure for me because they exist in this unique form.”
The attendees were dressed in their finest cocktail attire, with Robbie stunning in a ‘60s-inspired mini dress from the Spring 2024 Versace collection by Donatella (who, despite hosting another event, made a special appearance), creating a lively atmosphere.
Jeremy Scott, a supporter of several tour ensembles, admired the display of Barbie dolls dressed in vintage attire reimagined for the screen and red carpet (adjacent to a wall showcasing Robbie’s footwear choices); Hailey Bieber arrived fashionably late but headed straight to the Barbie: A World Tour book display (personally guided by Mukamal); while Zoë Kravitz (a loyal client of Mukamal) and Channing Tatum engaged in conversations amidst friends at the heart of the room. The gathering embodied the essence of a sophisticated cocktail party fitting for the occasion—complete with sparkling pink Don Julio tequila bottles.
