Season’s Greetings: Celebrate the Festive Season

In 2000, as a young Soldier, I spent my holidays in Kosovo, now an independent country. Concerns loomed over potential events due to the turn of the century. The Army, like many worldwide, was curious about the Y2K computer bug. There was apprehension about the locals’ reactions. On New Year’s Eve, we stationed ourselves somewhere, eager to be on guard duty as midnight struck. Benny took the lead in ushering in the New Year. Fortunately, the transition to 2000 was uneventful, marked only by distant celebratory gunfire. The computers smoothly switched over, portraying a world seemingly unchanged, and peace prevailed.

As this year draws to a close, I find solace in the prospect of some personal time for reflection, rejuvenation, and enjoyment. My journey along the Appalachian Trail commences in just over two months, necessitating various preparations. Amidst birthdays to celebrate and gear to assemble, the focus remains on training rigorously and formulating a concrete plan. The starting point dilemma fluctuates daily between Key West on the Eastern Continental Trail, Alabama’s Pinhoti Trail, or the Appalachian Trail itself. The indecision persists, but I will communicate my choice once finalized.

December’s Events

Following my last update, I embarked on a walk, only to be deterred by my protesting feet after a mere 300 feet. Subsequently, a storm brewed, prompting my sons to advise securing the tent before a power outage and tornado sirens added to the chaos. Despite minimal backyard wind, hail and rain left us drenched. Post-storm, while surveying the aftermath, a neighbor recounted a daring encounter with a tornado, sparking a flurry of texts from my youngest. The tornado’s impact, causing significant damage and tragic loss, highlighted the unpredictability of natural disasters and the fragility of life. Reflecting on the near miss had I persisted with my walk evoked a sense of gratitude for the redirection.

Training Update

Foot discomfort led to a hiatus from walking this month for healing purposes, attributing the issue to my current footwear. Anticipating the arrival of new shoes post-payday, I managed a 58-mile total with a recent walk alongside my youngest.

Gear Acquisition

Excitement mounts as I anticipate the arrival of my Hyperlite Mountain Gear Windrider 55 backpack, equipped with convenient features for my trek. Additionally, an umbrella for adverse weather, a water bottle attachment, and a versatile fanny pack are en route. The Brooks Caldera 6 trail running shoes, complemented by a pair of shorts, were also part of the gear upgrade.

January Objectives

The upcoming month is earmarked for intensive walking sessions, alongside meticulous gear evaluation and potential acquisitions. The anticipation builds as I train diligently for the impending adventure.
