“Back to Black,” directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson, stars Marisa Abela as Amy Winehouse. The official soundtrack for the upcoming Amy Winehouse biopic not only covers the late musician’s discography but also showcases her significant musical influences. Titled “Back to Black: Songs From the Original Motion Picture,” the soundtrack will be released on May 17, featuring 12 songs in its standard edition.
Included in the soundtrack are three original recordings from Winehouse’s debut album “Frank” (2003): “What Is It About Men,” “Stronger Than Me,” and “Know You Now.” Additionally, three tracks from her final studio album “Back to Black” are featured, such as the title track, “Love Is a Losing Game,” and “Tears Dry on Their Own.”
Interwoven with Winehouse’s music are pieces from Billie Holiday (“All of Me”), Minnie Riperton (“Les Fleurs”), Dinah Washington (“Mad About the Boy”), and Sarah Vaughan with Clifford Brown (“Embraceable You”), strategically placed at pivotal moments in the film.
Nick Cave, collaborating with Warren Ellis on the film’s score, contributes an original song titled “Song for Amy” to the soundtrack. This track stands out as the sole new recording on the album.
The deluxe edition of “Back to Black: Songs From the Original Motion Picture” expands the tracklist with 14 additional songs. Alongside Winehouse’s hits like “I Heard Love Is Blind,” “Fuck Me Pumps,” “(There Is) No Greater Love,” “Me & Mr. Jones,” “Rehab,” and a Live Lounge rendition of “Valerie,” the extended version includes tracks from Thelonious Monk, the Specials, Little Anthony & the Imperials, the Shangri-Las, Donny Hathaway, the Libertines, Tony Bennett, and Willie Nelson. This compilation will be available digitally, as well as in two-LP and two-CD formats.
The movie “Back to Black” stars Marisa Abela as Amy Winehouse, with Jack O’Connell portraying her husband, Blake Fielder-Civil; Lesley Manville as her grandmother, Cynthia; Eddie Marsan as her father, Mitch; and Juliet Cowan as her mother, Janis.
