Embracing the Festive Season with Melodies

As Christmas approaches rapidly, students and alumni of BYU–Hawaii have shared their beloved songs that capture the essence of the holiday season. The nostalgic recollections of their youth, thoughts of the miraculous birth of Jesus Christ, and the power of music to bring out the festive mood are just a few of the reasons why these Christmas songs bring so much joy to their hearts.

Brandt Shortland, a senior studying social work from New Zealand, cherishes “Rivers of Babylon” by Boney M. as his go-to Christmas song. This track holds a special place in his heart as his family plays it annually during the holiday season. Shortland expressed gratitude for the song, emphasizing how it helps him recollect significant life events, struggles, and eventual triumphs, drawing parallels to the Israelites’ victory in their Babylonian exile.

Hailing from Colorado and pursuing a business degree, Taylor Wagner’s ultimate Christmas anthem is “Oh Holy Night.” Wagner finds solace and tranquility in this song, attributing its calming effect to the soothing melody and profound lyrics that center around Jesus Christ’s profound impact on humanity.

For Hannz Jayme Leduna, a senior majoring in political science from the Philippines, the festive season kicks off with the tune “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas.” In her homeland, Christmas celebrations commence as early as September, and this song symbolizes the Filipinos’ anticipation and excitement for the holiday season. Leduna’s enthusiasm for Christmas is reignited each year by the joyous traditions of gift-giving and merrymaking with loved ones.

Addison Allred, a senior studying social work from Virginia, resonates deeply with Bien’s rendition of “O Holy Night.” The song’s poignant lyrics, particularly “A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices,” evoke images of illuminated houses, familial gatherings, and an overwhelming sense of joy, all made possible by the birth of Jesus Christ.

Ammon Hetaraka Chan Boon, a junior from Australia dual-majoring in social work and psychology, finds joy in the festive classic “Feliz Navidad.” This lively tune serves as a musical cue for Chan Boon’s family gatherings, where a single strum of the guitar sets the stage for a harmonious sing-along, setting a joyous mood and evoking cherished family memories.

Cynthia Uvang Snelson, a sophomore pursuing a degree in TESOL from Malaysia, finds delight in Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You.” The infectious beats of this song never fail to get her in the holiday spirit, prompting joyous dance sessions with her mother while decorating the Christmas tree, creating lasting memories of festive bliss.

Zavion Hubbell, a community member from Laie, has a soft spot for “Baby, It’s Cold Outside,” covered by Idina Menzel and Michael Bublé. While not a common choice in his neighborhood due to its romantic nature, the song’s sentimental value adds a unique touch to his Christmas playlist.

Jatin Narayan, a junior majoring in information technology and political science from Fiji, holds “Jingle Bells” close to his heart as his favorite Christmas melody. Narayan praises the song for its catchy tune, upbeat tempo, and nostalgic appeal, making it a universal favorite for sing-alongs and festive gatherings, evoking feelings of joy and excitement for all who join in.

An alumni from Indonesia named Andino Bima Mahreza has the same feelings as Narayan about “Jingle Bells,” describing the delight and excitement that this famous song provides him and how it represents the spirit of unity and celebration during the holidays.

Ian Carroll, a senior pursuing clinical psychology from Waianae, Hawaii, finds joy in two cherished Christmas songs. Firstly, “When Christmas Comes” from the beloved film “The Polar Express” holds a special place in his heart, embodying the true essence of Christmas and serving as a cherished family tradition. Additionally, Carroll finds solace in the hymn “Silent Night,” reflecting on the profound silence that encapsulates the miraculous birth of Christ, emphasizing the transformative power of quiet moments in witnessing extraordinary events unfold.
