At The Glasshouse for FSF LIVE, the Fashion Scholarship Fund’s 87th annual Awards, while there can only be one victor, all aspiring students left feeling enriched, inspired, and motivated for the future. This was all thanks to the abundance of priceless advice offered by Tracee Ellis Ross, Michael Burke, Paloma Elsesser, and other esteemed guests.
Dressed in a striking ensemble by Vaquera, Elsesser took on the role of emcee for the evening, overseeing the celebration of the accomplishments of the entire Class of 2024 FSF Scholars and the Virgil Abloh™ “Post-Modern” Scholars—a group comprising around 130 students from 72 schools nationwide.
During the event, the supermodel imparted a crucial piece of advice to the audience: seize the opportunity to connect with luminaries from the realms of design, retail, media, and business present in the room. “This gathering is filled with individuals you have yet to meet who could potentially alter the course of your life. Embrace the unknown. Don’t hesitate tonight!”
An ecstatic Tracee Ellis Ross took the stage to accept recognition for her groundbreaking multi-million dollar beauty venture, Pattern, presented by her longtime stylist and business partner, Karla Welch. Similar to Elsesser, Ross delivered straightforward advice without sugarcoating the challenges she faced. Despite facing rejection for more than ten years regarding her vision for a company catering to the unique hair care needs of Black women, she persisted, confident that her idea would not only be in demand but also prosperous. “I encourage you to engage in the vital task of balancing profit with integrity,” she advised the students. “These two aspects can align if you approach your work with an open heart, not blind ambition. It’s essential to possess a genuine care for humanity. So, share your innovations and creativity far and wide.”
The significance of persistence, resilience, and heeding one’s inner voice was reiterated by honoree Michael Burke, Chairman and CEO of LVMH Fashion Group. Burke recounted his decision to intern at Bernard Arnault’s fledgling company 46 years ago in a neglected area of Paris. “Success often requires decades of dedication,” he emphasized. “I encourage you not to seek immediate success. It’s nearly unattainable.” He stressed the importance of cultivating a support network and recognizing your unique strengths.
During his spotlight moment, Burke was introduced by the acclaimed filmmaker Spike Lee, who commended him for championing diverse talent, notably his early endorsement of the late Abloh, whom he later recruited to lead Louis Vuitton menswear.
